Introduction to Piping in Oil and Gas

Piping in oil and gas is an inevitable factor in the Oil and Gas sector, to transport the oil from one place to another several pipelines are used. A career in piping will provide you with opportunities all around the world. Piping in Oil and gas is mostly used in Oil rigs for upstream and downstream operations. To do the gathering, transmission, and distribution of oil, Piping in oil and gas is really unavoidable.

Piping engineering is one of the leading fields in oil and gas industries where mostly mechanical or production engineers and diploma candidates can develop their careers best.

As advanced technologies came to play a major role in all industries, with the benefit from that. The piping fields improved by initiating the implementation of new technologies and also integrating with different fields that are for example automation, instrumentation, etc.

What is Piping in Oil and Gas?

Piping is the only way to transport fluids to different locations and therefore we can’t neglect the importance of piping in any industry other than the pipe it has different fittings (elbow, tee,..) components(valve, flanges,…) instruments, and also process equipment (heat exchanger, boiler,…) are used then all combined we call it as piping or pipeline. unlike these fittings, piping is a combination of different fields too, as a result, there will be a huge career opportunity for civil, automation, instrumentation, chemical, and Petrochemical engineers in the field of work.

Working Principle of Piping in Oil and Gas

Piping engineering works based on fabrication techniques, as with the help of pipe and different fittings and components the fabrication must be done with the help of given design drawings (isometric drawings)

The piping part is divided into two different parts design and fabrication. With the help of different design software, the piping drawings are made (PDMS, SP3D). the next stage of fabrication is done with the help of these designed drawings by a piping engineer, piping supervisor, and piping foreman.

And the design and fabrication altogether form the structure.

Working

Once the company takes on a piping project in any field or in the oil and gas industry, the initial development should be based on procurement and manpower requirements once it is done the design department can submit the design drawings (isometric drawing, gad, p&id). After the successful submission, the field engineers come into play. By the drawings given the field engineers should fabricate the piping in the field or the shop.

The fabricated spool from the shop can be transported to the field and after being joined to the existing pipeline the complete structure can be fabricated. The fabrication is done by a piping engineer, piping supervisor, piping foremen, site engineer, and also fabricators and welders. After all the work has been done next phase is quality control, they can use different NDT tests and find out any defects that affect the quality of the weld and it can be repaired by the welding inspector.

Future Scope

Piping engineering plays a vital role in all fields. Apart from Oil and Gas it also has scope in pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, firefighting, F&B industries, and power plants even it can be used for gas distribution or water distribution to different places even houses. With the addition of newly invented technologies, the piping work can be everything very easily mostly in quality and safety. The new technologies that may include are for example, picking& passivation of pipes, pipeline buoyancy, usage of floating and forced root tanks, and the help of this new advanced technology will reflect in the quality and maintenance of piping and pipeline
